Safe Routes to School
Mission: Why do we exist?
SRTS mission is to encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school. SRTS is designed to make bicycling and walking to school a safe transportation option using projects and activities that improve safety and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution near elementary schools. Forty seven elementary schools are participating in the two year SRTS Program with a total funding of $4.7 million.

----Reduce the risk of developing obesity and chronic diseases;
----Reduce feelings of depression and anxiety;
----Promote psychological well being; and
----Promote a healthy and active lifestyle
Two Major Goals

Goal #1- Increase the number of students walking and bicycling to school

Goal#2--Improve the safety of students walking and bicycling to school
Enforcement:
----Increase EPISD Police Department presence
----Purchase 184 campus traffic cameras--install on the school building four surveillance cameras per campus to monitor the traffic and pedestrian areas (perimeter) in support of thebiking/walking program. This excludes Logan as it is located on military property and enforcement is not allowed
----Implement EPISD Police Department speed radar guns--purchase 46 traffic radar guns for use by EPISD Police Officers to monitor traffic before and after school near the campuses to help minimize traffic and safety issues. This excludes Logan as it is located on military property and enforcement is not allowed
----Create a crossing guard program

----Start a Walking School Bus program
----Participate in the International Walk to School Day in October of 2011
----Initiate a walking/biking mileage club or other contest
----Initiate a student reward program for safe travel behaviors such as
----Bicycle and bicycle safety gear giveaways--approximately134 bicycles and helmets per year will be awarded to each of the 47 schools
----Trophies, ribbons, awards, t-shirts, etc.
Education:
----Create parent and student biking, walking, traffic and public safety awareness programs. Provide teacher training on bicycle safety curriculum. Five day curriculum will be implemented during school year for district-wide 3rd through 5th grade students.
----Continue bike rodeos--personal, pedestrian, and bicycle safety programs
----Parents and caregivers safe driving program
----Student classroom activities - Walking Math program
----Provide consultant presentations on biking, walking, traffic and public safety. Two Safety Bicycle Consultants will be hired to provide training to P.E. coaches and students on safety awareness and education programs aligned to the SRTS Program
----Bicycle clubs teaching bicycling safety
----Purchase and distribute promotional and incentive items
----Implement public relations campaign:
----Media - local news/newspaper
----Public outreach - web, email, phone
Evaluation:
----Solicit and hire independent evaluator to:
----Work with Campus Advisory Team and EPISD R & E Department to gather evaluaton data needed to monitor and document outcomes and trends
----Condut end-of-year evaluation to gauge program effectiveness
